About the Artwork: In 1939, Reeve Lewenthal and Maurice Liederman created an organization in New York that revolved solely around American artists. Lewenthal and Liederman’s goal was to find work for struggling American artists. Wood soon became one of many that signed with Lewenthal and Liederman. Just like other artists of the 1930s, Wood needed work and financial help. Lewenthal was able to find work for Wood creating prints and lithographs for commercial products and businesses. Family Doctor was created by Wood for a pharmaceutical business is Chicago, Illinois, called Abbott Laboratories. (from: Corn, Wanda M. Grant Wood The Regionalist Vision. London: Yale UP, 1983.
