SUMMARY:DuMA Baseball Exhibition Farewell
DESCRIPTION:10 AM – 12 PM: Baseball themed games for the family. \nCelebrate summer and the final days of the exhibition\, Picturing America’s Pastime\, A Snapshot of the Photo Collection at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. \nThere will be popcorn and baseball themed games which test your skill at pitching and catching. \nOutdoor games will take place in Washington Park\, across from DuMA. Washington Park was important in Dubuque baseball history as it was the site of many early games. \n1:30 PM: Dr Ashley Brown’s talk. \nCelebrate and honor Juneteenth with author and historian Dr Ashley Brown\, Assistant Professor and Allan H. Selig Chair in the History of Sport and Society\, University of Wisconsin-Madison\, who will speak about athletes breaking racial and gender barriers at a time when American sports were still deeply segregated. \nTitle of talk: Behind and Beyond the Bobbleheads\, Caps\, Movies\, and Video Games: The Cultural and Social Significance of Negro League Baseball and the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. \nDescription: In recent decades\, Hollywood\, the video game industry\, and product manufacturers have embraced the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and Negro League Baseball. Consumers have enthusiastically purchased tickets and bought merchandise\, engaging in nostalgia and demonstrating their interests in these trailblazing athletes. In this talk\, Professor Ashley Brown addresses the origins\, daily realities\, complexities\, and legacies of the leagues. As Professor Brown asserts\, the impact and meaning of both businesses were alternately priceless and mixed with the problems of the past.\nDr. Brown is a historian of the twentieth-and twenty-first century United States whose research and teaching focus on the history of sport\, African American history\, and women’s history. Dr. Brown received a PH.D. from George Washington University \nPlease RSVP to Dr. Brown’s talk using this online form\nOrestes “Minnie” Miñoso by Bob Lerner August 29\, 1951\, courtesy of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum\n

SUMMARY:A Conversation with a Curator
DESCRIPTION:Volumes have been written about art with discussions of craft reserved as an afterthought. Art history’s use of painting as the standard classification left three-dimensional works\, such as crafts and ceramics\, fighting for their rightful place with the same status as the painted image. Fariello’s talk challenges today’s art world vision and is sure to spark a lively debate. \nCurator\, scholar and author of eight books. Anna Fariello is a former Smithsonian Renwick Fellow in American Craft where her research focused on the southern craft revival. \nRegistration deadline is Wednesday\, August 24. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER \n \n

SUMMARY:Talk with Judy Richardson
DESCRIPTION:Judy Richardson will give a featured talk sponsored by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque in conjunction with the Dubuque Museum of Art’s new exhibit\, “African American Art in the 20th Century.” \nRichardson was at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement\, working on the staff of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and organizing a “freedom school” for young people to work together across racial lines to achieve equal rights for all Americans. \nShe was associate producer of the seminal PBS series “Eyes on the Prize: America’s Civil Rights Movement\,” and with five other SNCC women activists\, she edited “Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts by Women in SNCC\,” an anthology of memoirs by 52 women civil rights activists. \nLocation: Roosevelt Middle School\nTime: March 7\, 2019 @ 6:30 pm (doors open at 6 PM) \nTitle: Will the Circle Be Unbroken: Little-Known Stories of the Civil Rights Movement   \nSummary: Ms. Richardson will highlight the stories of the lesser-known people of the civil Rights Movement — the “ordinary” people who were both courageous and strategically brilliant; they were both the foot soldiers and the leaders.  Those like Fannie Lou Hamer\, Ella Baker\, E.D. Nixon\, and Amzie Moore\, among others\, provided the grounding and the guidance that allowed the Civil Rights Movement to flourish.  These were the leaders who influenced us as young organizers in SNCC\, the only national civil rights group founded and run by young people\, such as Congressman John Lewis\, then SNCC’s Chair. \nEvent site: https://www.dbqfoundation.org/events/free-talk-civil-rights-activist-and-filmmaker-judy-richardson

SUMMARY:Lecture - Dorothy Johnson
DESCRIPTION:“From the King’s Collection to Public Display: the Salon Exhibition and the Making of the Modern Museum\,” by Dorothy Johnson\, Roy J. Carver Professor of Art History\, University of Iowa School of Art and Art History \nThis lecture explores the role of the Salon Exhibitions in 18th century Paris in the emergence of the modern museum.  Every two years throughout most of the 18th century the King of  France hosted a display of works by the best contemporary French artists in his palace\, the Louvre.  The works at the Salon exhibitions were carefully chosen and organized in a specific order by curators of the exhibitions\, a feature that still influences modern museums today.  Vast crowds flocked to the exhibitions\, much like our blockbuster shows\, and established the idea that art should be made accessible to the wider public.  The Salon exhibitions continued during the French Revolution\, the Empire\, and successive regimes and were a highlight of cultural life in the 19th century.  In the early 19th century Napoleon transformed the Louvre into one of the first modern museums of art. \nDUMA salon style installation.
