SUMMARY:ArchiTREK Ale & Architecture: Millwork District
DESCRIPTION:ArchiTREK Ale & Architecture: Historic Millworking District\nJuly 18\, 2019\n$15 ($10 DuMA Members)\nThe Smokestack\, 62 E 7th St.\n \nDuMA and Heritage Works partner to present a series of walking tours of Dubuque architecture that will provide insights into Dubuque’s historic buildings. \nOnce home to the world’s largest millworking operation\, this emerging Dubuque neighborhood has been transformed from a gritty industrial area into a mixed use district featuring residences\, hotels\, restaurants\, bars\, retail\, and more. We’ll explore the remnants of the earlier industrial age\, see a variety of different architectural styles\, and learn how the rebirth of this district took place. We will discuss the history of the millworking industry and how important it was to Dubuque’s early growth as a powerhouse of manufacturing and transportation. You’ll discover buildings that have been completely renovated along with some that still need to find their new purpose. We’ll stop at a few local bars along the way and participants are welcome to purchase their own drinks. \nMEET The Smokestack\, 62 E 7th St. \nClick Here to Register Online\nRegistration is required. Call the Museum at 563-557-1851 if you have any questions\, or if you are unable to use this online form.

Patrons will make 2-3 stops in bars along the route and can purchase their own drinks at each stop. Tours will be given by Jason Neises\, Vice Chair of the Dubuque County Preservation Committee. \nThe Central Avenue Corridor between 14th and 22nd Streets has one of the most intact collections of historic commercial buildings in Dubuque. For the workers at the Pack and millwork factories this neighborhood was a “city within a city” with stores\, churches\, taverns\, businesses\, schools\, and everything they needed within an easy walk. Now the neighborhood is attracting new attention for revitalization\, including some vibrant murals by Voices Productions. We’ll peel back the layers of reuse and renovation and see remnants of this district’s colorful past\, including hidden architectural details and (of course) some pubs and taverns that have long been fixtures in this neighborhood. \nMeet at: \n\nNoonan’s Tap\, 1618 Central Ave.\, 6:00 PM\nNOTE : Tour does not return to the starting location; ends at Next Phase Karaoke Bar\, 1902 Central Ave.\n\nONLINE REGISTRATION FORM (CLICK HERE)\nFEE FOR ARCHITREK TOUR: $15 ($10 DuMA Members) \nCall the Museum at 563-557-1851 if you have any questions\, or if you are unable to use the online form above.

SUMMARY:archiTREK
DESCRIPTION:Walk and Talk tour of Cottingham & Butler Building (Security Building)\n800 Main St\, Dubuque\, Iowa 52001\nOriginally built as Stampfer’s Department Store\, the Cottingham & Butler Building (Security Building) has been a crown jewel of Main Street since it was built in 1896. The building’s cream-colored terra cotta and elaborate Beaux-Arts style ornament have been lovingly restored by the Butler family and has given us a glimpse of what Dubuque looking like during the Gilded Age. The building’s designer\, Fridolin Heer\, was one of Dubuque’s most prominent architects and also designed the Dubuque County Courthouse and the Town Clock. We’ll explore the history of this building\, how it was constructed\, and the recent efforts to return the building to its original glory.\n The tour will begin at noon in the Cottingham & Butler Building lobby. There is a suggested $5 donation. \nONLINE REGISTRATION FORM (CLICK HERE)\n\nDuMA and Heritage Works partner to present a series of walking tours of Dubuque architecture.\nWalk and Talk and Ale and Architecture will provide insights into Dubuque’s historic buildings. \nWalk and Talk are 45-60 minute lunchtime tours in downtown Dubuque including the Historic Federal Building\, the Roshek building\, US Bank and the Grand Opera House.
