SUMMARY:Randy Richmond Gallery Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday\, July 23 to hear a gallery talk from Randy Richmond\, a still-life photographer. The humble still life—the genre of art that features only an arrangement of objects—has managed\, over the centuries\, to contain multitudes. \nStill-life images are their own worlds\, greater than the sum of their parts; they have been radical formal experiments\, markers of colonialism and wealth\, stark reminders of mortality\, love letters and portraits\, and even illustrations of scientific knowledge. \nRandy will talk about his inspiration\, process and technique in the exhibition Subtext and Overstory: Still-life Photography by Randy Richmond.

DESCRIPTION:DuMA will host an “Afternoon of Music and Contemplation” in support of the Ukrainian people on Sunday\, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Museum. \nThis musical program is sponsored by Sue Lindsay\, DuMA supporter and former volunteer. From the onset of the Ukrainian War\, the WCK Chef Relief Team brought and continues to deliver tens of thousands of fresh nourishing meals daily to Ukrainian cities and surrounding regions\, bringing hope and sustenance to those in bomb shelters\, hospitals\, churches\, seniors\, and people trapped on the front lines. \nYour donation will be used to support WCK’s emergency food relief efforts. \nClick Here to Donate to World Central Kitchen

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Joyce Polance
DESCRIPTION:Tune in at 1:00 pm on Facebook or YouTube to watch the live premier of our virtual conversation between Artist Joyce Polance and DuMA’s Director of Education\, Margaret Buhr. \n\n\nThe two will discuss Polance’s current exhibition of 14 oil paintings made since 2015\, in which the artist expresses deeply felt\, dark emotions through the visual forms of landscapes and cityscapes. These expressionistic paintings meld realism with abstraction\, and focus on movement\, energy\, and emotion. Natural and urban landscapes take on human characteristics that reflect our uncertain times. \n\nPolance was a Chicago-based painter for over 26 years before a move in December 2020\, accelerated by COVID-19\, took her away from the Midwest and back to her home state of New York. Polance was born in New York City in 1965. She attended Wesleyan University and received a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Fashion Institute of Technology. She has exhibited internationally and has work in many private and corporate collections. \nDuMA Facebook Event \nDuMA’s Youtube Channel

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:DuMA will debut three exhibitions and host an opening reception on Saturday\, June 26 from 5:00-7:00 pm. \nThe event is open to the public and will feature new works of art on view for the first time. Refreshments will be served along with a cash bar. \nRegular admission rates apply for non-members. Museum members are invited to attend free of charge. Accepted Biennial artists will be in attendance\, and the juror will present awards for first\, second\, and third place entries. \nAbout the exhibitions: \nThe 2021 “DuMA Biennial” is a competitive\, juried exhibition intended to recognize and honor the artistic talent that exists throughout our region\, within a 200-mile radius of Dubuque. This year’s entries shed light on how artists have experienced\, interpreted\, and reacted to the last two years. The exhibition is sponsored by Premier Bank\, Humanities Iowa\, and Grand River Medical Group. \n“Emotionscapes: Paintings by Joyce Polance” is a series of 14 oil paintings made since 2015. The expressionistic paintings meld realism with abstraction\, and focus on movement\, energy\, and emotion. Polance was a Chicago-based painter for over 26 years before a move in December 2020\, accelerated by COVID-19\, took her away from the Midwest and back to her home state of New York. \n“How the Big Bad Wolf Got His Comeuppance” is the second book in Arthur Geisert’s trilogy of stories set in Clayton County\, Iowa\, and presents a new interpretation of the legendary three little pigs story. The first book in the trilogy\, Pumpkin Island\, came out in 2019 and was set in Geisert’s hometown of Elkader\, the county seat. The third book is currently in creation and will feature trolls who live under the many stone bridges on the Turkey River\, the main tributary in the county that flows into the Mississippi River. Original etchings will be on display. This exhibition is sponsored by MidWestOne Bank. \nVisit dbqart.org/upcoming-exhibitions/ for more information.
