Participants will transform 3-dimensional collected objects into 2-dimensional drawings. The workshop is designed for teenagers and adults. The workshop is free\, but registration is required. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Joyce Polance
DESCRIPTION:Tune in at 1:00 pm on Facebook or YouTube to watch the live premier of our virtual conversation between Artist Joyce Polance and DuMA’s Director of Education\, Margaret Buhr. \n\n\nThe two will discuss Polance’s current exhibition of 14 oil paintings made since 2015\, in which the artist expresses deeply felt\, dark emotions through the visual forms of landscapes and cityscapes. These expressionistic paintings meld realism with abstraction\, and focus on movement\, energy\, and emotion. Natural and urban landscapes take on human characteristics that reflect our uncertain times. \n\nPolance was a Chicago-based painter for over 26 years before a move in December 2020\, accelerated by COVID-19\, took her away from the Midwest and back to her home state of New York. Polance was born in New York City in 1965. She attended Wesleyan University and received a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Fashion Institute of Technology. SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:DuMA will debut three exhibitions and host an opening reception on Saturday\, June 26 from 5:00-7:00 pm. \nThe event is open to the public and will feature new works of art on view for the first time. Refreshments will be served along with a cash bar. \nRegular admission rates apply for non-members. Museum members are invited to attend free of charge. Accepted Biennial artists will be in attendance\, and the juror will present awards for first\, second\, and third place entries. \nAbout the exhibitions: \nThe 2021 “DuMA Biennial” is a competitive\, juried exhibition intended to recognize and honor the artistic talent that exists throughout our region\, within a 200-mile radius of Dubuque. This year’s entries shed light on how artists have experienced\, interpreted\, and reacted to the last two years. The exhibition is sponsored by Premier Bank\, Humanities Iowa\, and Grand River Medical Group. \n“Emotionscapes: Paintings by Joyce Polance” is a series of 14 oil paintings made since 2015. The expressionistic paintings meld realism with abstraction\, and focus on movement\, energy\, and emotion. Polance was a Chicago-based painter for over 26 years before a move in December 2020\, accelerated by COVID-19\, took her away from the Midwest and back to her home state of New York. \n“How the Big Bad Wolf Got His Comeuppance” is the second book in Arthur Geisert’s trilogy of stories set in Clayton County\, Iowa\, and presents a new interpretation of the legendary three little pigs story. The first book in the trilogy\, Pumpkin Island\, came out in 2019 and was set in Geisert’s hometown of Elkader\, the county seat. The third book is currently in creation and will feature trolls who live under the many stone bridges on the Turkey River\, the main tributary in the county that flows into the Mississippi River. Grab your sunhat\, water bottle\, and your favorite big person to meet with Miss Hana for an outdoor art adventure in the shade at Washington Park\, across the street from the museum.\nJune’s Young at Art program is inspired by the DuMA Biennial juried exhibition opening June 26th. Young artists will have access to a variety of art supplies to create their own masterpiece\, which they will then mat for display in their home gallery. DESCRIPTION:The Dubuque Museum of Art\, in partnership with Voices Productions and with additional support by Trappist Caskets and Humanities Iowa\, is hosting a temporary exhibition of Dana Harrison’s I Am A Man mural at the corner of Bluff Street and 8th Street in downtown Dubuque. \n\n\nThe Museum will host a free community conversation in Washington Park on Sunday\, April 11 at 1:00 pm between the artist and Museum Curator\, Stacy Gage Peterson. The rain date is April 18. \n\n\nAttendees can purchase lunch from the Happi Hibachi food truck\, which will be at the park before & during the event. \n\nPainting\, weather permitted\, will begin Saturday\, April 10.
